Tower of Ridgeland

Well. Well. Ridgeland Mayor Gene McGee cast the deciding, tie-breaking vote in favor of the 13-story tower in Ridgeland, 200 Renaissance. When it is done, it will house the Butler Snow law firm, Horne CPA Group and Regions Bank -- and it will leave a big ol' empty Amsouth/Deposity Guaranty/Regions Building in downtown Jackson. Developer Buster Bailey said construction could start as soon as next week.

How do you get up so early, when you stay up so late?

My pastor was up in Jxn today doing Baptist stuff. He went by the stadium while he was at UnivMedCenter just to breathe George County air in that direction.

George County schools are rumored to be getting out early Friday. It wouldn't surprise me if the entire county was a ghost town that day. EVERYONE I know is planning to be at the game. I get to help feed the team & cheerleaders breakfast on Friday before they head north.

And, of course, the article doesn't mention all the good and loyal employees who fell by the wayside in the initial planning stages of the move. Too bad Linda Davis didn't have the guts to stick around, and with McGee's ties to the new tenants, it's a no brainer that he would have cast his vote in their favor. No surprise there.

Development up (like I said before) is not always a bad thing. But, abandoning a building downtown to build a new one further out, is not exactly "smart growth planning". So, is Regions the new Wal-Mart -- just abandon your old building and build a new one every few years? Yeah - that's helpful for the community.

Most of the lawyers in that firm live in Madison, so they really don't care about Jackson or their employees or even their retired lawyers.
