59. On May 11, 1887, a most unexpected object fell from the sky during a severe hail storm near Bovina. The unusual object proved to be a 6-inch by 8-inch gopher turtle completely encased in ice.

Now THIS is a piece of trivia!! Wonder how in the world that happened??
My guess -- Tornado sucked the little bugger up and then he took the final ride in the ice.
huh?
Tornado sucks turtle in the air. He gets caught up in the circular air currents. He goes up and down, adding layers of ice until he gets too heavy and falls to the ground. That is how hail is formed. He became the mother of all hailstones.
Poor little fellow. I had a pet turtle named Toddly Woddly when I was a child and we went to California and lived for nearly a year when my dad's Marine Corps reserve unit was called up for the Korean War. Jackson was hit with the worst ice storm in history and when we got back home, I found Toddly Woddly's empty shell in the flower bed. Talk about childhood trauma!
I had a turtle named Yoda when I was a kid. My dog ate Yoda. I have never had a turtle since.
Neither have I.
The tornado theory works for me.
