67. Leontyne Price, of Laurel was the first African-American to achieve international stardom in the field of opera. Ms. Price was with the New York Metropolitan Opera and gave her last performance on January 3, 1985, in the role of Aida.

There are a lot of famous people from MS. We have a lot to be proud of.
My favorite is Morgan Freeman.
Freeman's bio says he is Memphis born, but if you live in MS, then you belong to us.
I remember Leontyne Price and she was truly awesome! In 2005, Oprah Winfrey honored Price and 24 other influential African-American women at a Legends Ball.
