Gut feeling

My guess is that Chip Pickering will be appointed to fill Trent's seat. Nothing to back it up, just a gut feeling (and listening to office gossip). Why do I think it?

1. He has been Trent's understudy (I've joked Trent is his second of "My two daddies.")
2. He quits with no real job lined up. Spending time with your family is wonderful -- I did it for a week in a minivan -- but bills have to be paid, too.
3. Barbour really can't appoint himself. If Trent had hung on a couple more years, I would have said that was the scenario.

That's conventional wisdom at this point. But the last week has proven that conventional wisdom doesn't mean squat. I would have never guessed McMillin would be Jackson Police Chief or that Jeff Bower would have been run off.

Maybe Chip will fill in for a while until the Guv can run for the seat. I think Haley will at least serve his second term as Guv.

When the Guv made that call, Chip would laugh out loud!

It's like we're living in a freaking twilight zone!

What next?! Santa hiding Easter eggs??

I got that feeling too. By resigning now, before the end of the year, a special election will be held. If Trent had waited until after January 1st, the governor would have had to appoint someone. I wouldn't be surprised if Chip Pickering ran. Or maybe John Reeves should just step up to the plate and run and make sure the election is conducted properly.

Reckon Lott is on somebody's running mate list? Presidential, that is?

Since we are throwing out gut feelings.

Don't see Trent being on a VP list.

Aww come one Marshall, coaches get fired, you get a new police chief why can't mr perfect hair be on somebody's, say Fred Thompson's VP list?

The stink of the Strom Thurmond debacle would bring him down nationally. He'd get beat to death with it.

Calling Mike Moore.

It's too early to resign if he wanted a VP spot. He'd have waited until the monimee was named. He would be a more attractive choice as a top ranking Senate leader rather than a former top ranking Senate leader.

But I agree with MR. He's a little to dirty for that level of politics now. He'd turn off a lot of voters outside of MS.

Chip to Senate
Trent to Governor
Haley to VP

I don't beleive that for one minute but speculation seems to be the theme of this thread. I could see everything but Trent staying in Politics. I think this announcement has to do with the new Senate ethics rule about lobbying by former Senators.

Well, Phil, when asked about registering as a lobbyist at his press conference this morning, Helmet Head said he wasn't actually lobbying, just having conversation, so he hadn't registered yet.
